The Nearpost’s Eamonn Flanagan Exposed

Australia seems to have more bloggers that write about football than you can poke with the proverbial stick. Every month, here at the84thminute we will try and learn a little about the people that are so passionate about football both here in Australia and around the world. First cab off the rank is Eamonn Flanagan, who is the prolific and passionate author of the Nearpost blog.

Name:

Eamonn Flanagan

Why do you blog?

Chucked out of work at the age of 43 due to ill health, now stuck at home, turned the computer on and found a football blog, and blogging gives me contact with the world, through football. Until I recover :)

Best football match you’ve seen live?

Socceroos vs Uruguay, Celtic vs Porto UEFA Cup Final, Canberra Cosmos 8 Sydney Olympic 1

You’re the captain of a five-a-side team - who would be the four other players? And what would your team name be?

My partner Heather, a great striker, Peter Fitzsimons coz I’d love to continually bag the bastard for not working hard enough for the team, Henrik Larsson, a great football role model, Mark Viduka because he’d be great over a short distance. Team name: Canberra4CLeague

Apart from blogging about football, what’s your day job?

I smell an insult, this is my day job!

Favourite football ground?

Telstra Dome, SFS, Parkhead, Glasgow on a European night.

Anyone from Rangers FC, Alan Smith of Newcastle United, Steve Laybutt.

Is it soccer or football?

It’s always been football in Australia. Got a problem with that?

What is your pre-match routine, being it watching or playing?

Well we have no team in Canberra, will we ever? So it normally involves getting a plane to Melbourne or Seville, or Bangkok or a drive up to Sydney to watch Sydney FC and the lads always stop at Macca’s on the way up and Hungry Jacks on the way back. That’s Canberrans for you!

Eamonn is a football fan. His first love is Glasgow Celtic and he once flew to Seville for the UEFA Cup Final Celtic v Porto 2003. But he’s being a keen follower of Australian football since he arrived in Canberra from the UK in 1990. Not only does Eamonn write the Nearpost blog he also presents a National football radio show on the Australian Community Radio Network. He is an advocate for Women’s football, the A-League, a Canberra A-League team and doing a trick on the ball even when a pass will do!
